The Hybrid Workflow: Fixing Blurry Backgrounds

We all know the struggle. You write a prompt asking for a “wide angle, f/22, deep depth of field” landscape shot. You want crisp details from the foreground all the way to the horizon.

And what do you get? Bokeh soup.

Because modern AI models are trained on high-end professional photography, they have an inherent “Aesthetic Bias” toward shallow depth of field. To the AI, “High Quality” equals “Blurry Background.” Fighting this with prompts alone often feels like screaming at a brick wall.

Today, I’m going to show you how to fix this. But we aren’t going to build a massive, 100-node inpainting monster to do it. We are going to use a Hybrid Workflow.

The Philosophy: Use the Right Tool for the Job

ComfyUI is incredibly powerful, but sometimes it is overkill for simple tasks. Why spend 30 minutes debugging a masking node when the device in your pocket can do the same job in 3 seconds?

Here is my workflow for getting perfectly sharp backgrounds by combining Qwen with Android AI.

Step 1: Generate Your Base Image

First, generate your image in ComfyUI as usual. Focus on getting the subject (the person) looking perfect. Don’t worry if the background is blurry; we are about to swap the lens.

Step 2: The Mobile “Cheat Code” (Subject Removal)

This is where we save time. Instead of setting up complex “LaMa” or “Inpaint” nodes in ComfyUI to remove the person and fill in the background, simply send the image to your phone.

If you have a modern Android (like the Samsung S25 I’m using here) or a Pixel/iPhone with AI features:

  1. Open the image in your Gallery.
  2. Hit Edit and select the Generative AI / Magic Eraser tool.
  3. Press and hold on the subject and hit Generate/Erase.

The phone’s NPU will instantly remove the person and generate a clean background in their place. It doesn’t need to be perfect pixel-peeping quality yet; it just needs to be clean enough to work with.

Step 3: The Background “De-Blur” (Back to ComfyUI)

Since the background is now isolated (no person to accidentally ruin), we can be aggressive. I run this image through an Image-to-Image workflow using a specialized Upscaler or De-Blur model (like 1x-Fatality-DeBlur or similar). Get the workflow here: DeBlur

The Trick: Upscale the background to generate new details, then downscale it back to the original size. This creates a “Super-Sampled” effect that sharpens leaves, waves, and horizons naturally.

Step 4: The Composite

Now you have two images:

  1. Your Original Image (Perfect Subject, Blurry Background).
  2. Your Processed Background (No Subject, Sharp Background).

Use a simple background removal node (like LayerStyle or BiRefNet) on the Original Image to cut out your subject, and simply paste them on top of your new, sharp background.

The Result

The difference is night and day. We have gone from a generic “portrait mode” look to a fully realized environmental shot.

Summary

Don’t be afraid to leave the ComfyUI interface. By letting your phone handle the “destructive” editing (erasing the subject), you save massive amounts of time and VRAM, leaving your GPU free to focus on the high-fidelity refinement.
